The Ministry of Human Rights (HAM) revealed the latest data on the humanitarian situation in Papua, where there are around 122,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) requiring immediate handling. This figure reflects the still-high escalation of conflict driving residents to flee their hometowns in search of safety.
Deputy Minister of Human Rights, Mugiyanto Sipin, stated that his party would soon initiate a cross-ministerial coordination meeting. This step is being taken to ensure more precise data on the distribution of evacuees and to synergize aid from various parties, including the Ministry of Social Affairs, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection.
Mugiyanto emphasized that the government's main priority at present is to guarantee that the basic needs of displaced persons are met. Comprehensive coordination efforts are considered crucial so that handling the impacts of conflict does not run in silos on the ground, given the complexity of the situation in the region.
The security situation in Papua has come under sharp focus following a series of armed violence events over the past month. Conflicts between security forces and the TPNPB-OPM group often result in civilian casualties, including tragic incidents affecting civilians and a foreign pilot in Intan Jaya Regency and Yahukimo Regency in early July 2026.
Data from Human Rights Monitor shows an increasing trend in the number of internally displaced persons reaching significant figures between 2018 and 2026. With 122,000 people affected, the government is urged to take immediate strategic steps to restore regional stability and provide tangible protection for civilians in Papua.
