The visitor rate of hikers on the Mount Lawu trail, specifically through the Cemoro Kandang entrance in Tawangmangu, Karanganyar Regency, experienced a sharp surge during the school holiday period. Based on data from the basecamp management as of Saturday (7/4/2026), public enthusiasm to climb the mountain located on the border of Central Java and East Java has risen sharply compared to regular days.
Bagus, representing the basecamp management, revealed that the volume of hikers this weekend reached 350 people. This number is recorded as double the normal weekend average, which usually ranges around only 100 people. The majority of hikers are destined for the Candradimuka Crater area, while others continue their journey to the summit.
The main challenge currently faced by visitors is the 'bediding' phenomenon, or an extreme temperature drop. Bagus noted that temperatures in the basecamp area during the day range between 10 to 15 degrees Celsius, while at night it can plummet to 7-8 degrees Celsius. Information from hikers staying overnight at high altitudes even mentioned that temperatures dropped to 5 degrees Celsius, causing ice crystals or frost to form.
Given the challenging weather conditions, management strongly advises all hikers to ensure top physical health, carry adequate gear, and bring sufficient logistical reserves to prevent the risk of hypothermia. Safety mitigation is a top priority amid the uncertain cold weather.
On the other hand, for hikers, the terrain toward Candradimuka Crater offers a unique adventure appeal. Hapi, a hiker from Karanganyar, admitted feeling challenged by the route, which requires navigating rocky rivers and using rope rappelling techniques across cliffs. This technical experience attracts hikers seeking an adventure beyond standard hiking trails.
