Minister of Human Rights, Natalius Pigai, emphasized the urgency of a national-scale political policy in mitigating the ongoing conflict plaguing the Papua region. According to him, the piecemeal approach applied so far has proven unable to address the root causes driving sustained violence in the area.
This statement follows data from Komnas HAM recording a significant trend of escalating violence, with dozens of incidents logged between 2025 and early 2026. Pigai highlighted that information openness in the digital era means every violent incident in Papua is now transparently monitored by the international community, directly impacting global perception of Indonesia's human rights track record.
In his assessment, Pigai revealed that within just one month, the escalating conflict in various locations such as Dogiyai, Yahukimo, and Tembagapura has claimed at least 20 lives. This figure serves as an urgent indicator that case-by-case handling previously carried out by institutions must be immediately upgraded into a comprehensive strategy.
Furthermore, the Human Rights Minister asserted that Papua is a strategic national issue whose resolution surpasses the capacity of any single agency. He called for massive collaboration among the executive, legislative, and judicial branches, as well as national figures, to formulate a fair and dignified resolution.
As a step forward, the Ministry of Human Rights is committed to continuing to foster inclusive dialogue. This approach is expected to break the cycle of violence by prioritizing the protection of citizens' human rights as the main priority in establishing stability and permanent peace in the Land of Cenderawasih.
