Minister of Human Rights, Natalius Pigai, emphasized that resolving the prolonged conflict in Papua requires strategic steps through national-level political decisions. This statement comes in response to the rising escalation of violence recorded by the National Commission on Human Rights, with dozens of incidents recorded throughout 2025 until the first quarter of 2026.
According to Pigai, current information technology dynamics mean that every violent incident in Papua is rapidly monitored by both domestic and international publics. This demands that the government take immediate preventive action to safeguard the nation's dignity and Indonesia's image globally regarding human rights protection standards.
He highlighted that the conflict management approach used so far has tended to be partial, focusing only on case-by-case resolution. Pigai believes this strategy is less effective because it does not address the underlying root causes. Therefore, he urged that this issue not be seen as the responsibility of a single ministry alone.
To achieve sustainable peace, Pigai proposed establishing a national consensus involving various pillars of the state, ranging from the executive, legislative, and judicial branches to political parties and national figures. This synergy is considered crucial to creating an integrated and just approach for all communities in Papua.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Human Rights is committed to continuing to promote dialogue and policies based on respect for human rights. It was emphasized that the government has full responsibility to ensure the safety of every citizen while seeking a peaceful solution capable of addressing Papua's issues structurally and permanently.
