The Italian Football Federation's (FIGC) move to publicly showcase their efforts to approach Pep Guardiola has drawn sharp criticism from the Italian Sports Minister, Andrea Abodi. This communication policy was deemed a high-risk speculative move, especially after the federation eventually chose Andrea Pirlo to lead the Azzurri.
This criticism arose after the new FIGC Technical Director, Paolo Maldini, along with special advisor Leonardo, traveled to Barcelona to negotiate directly with Guardiola. Although the Spanish tactician rejected the offer, the FIGC still disclosed the negotiation process in an official press conference.
Abodi emphasized that high-level diplomatic moves for the national team should be conducted behind closed doors to maintain stability. According to him, announcing major targets to the public without certainty or a guaranteed agreement would only trigger public speculation and create unfair comparisons for the coach who was ultimately selected.
While regretting the FIGC's communication strategy, Abodi reaffirmed his commitment to support Andrea Pirlo, who is now projected to lead the national team with a four-year contract. He hopes the legendary former midfielder can prove his capabilities and bring a long-term positive impact to Italian football's achievements.
Currently, Pirlo is still finalizing the administrative process of terminating his contract with United Arab Emirates club United FC before officially taking office. Throughout his coaching career, Pirlo has managed Juventus, Sampdoria, and Fatih Karagumruk, winning the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana during his tenure with the Old Lady in the 2020-2021 season.
