Universitas Teuku Umar (UTU) has officially stepped onto the international stage by establishing a strategic partnership with Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), Malaysia. This step was taken to prepare superior human resources who are experts in the field of oil and gas to support industrial needs in the West-South Aceh region.
The UTU delegation, led directly by the Rector, Prof. Dr. Ishak Hasan, M.Si., was warmly welcomed by the leadership of UTP, including the Chair of Petroleum Engineering, Dr. Mohd Azuan Maoinser. This meeting was not only an opportunity to build relations, but also a starting point for intensive collaboration in the development of education, research, and community service.
Both institutions agreed to open up major opportunities for the academic community, including student exchange programs, scholarships for master's and doctoral degrees, and the organization of international classes in English. These programs are designed to boost academic capacity and the quality of graduates to ensure they have global competitiveness in the petroleum and mining industries.
Prof. Ishak Hasan emphasized that this cooperation is a long-term strategy, considering the abundant natural resource potential in Aceh. With the discovery of new oil reserves and the increasingly massive operations of mining companies, the need for competent professional workers at the local level has become an inevitable urgency.
In addition to focusing on improving the competence of experts, this visit also served as a promotional medium for The 12th International UTU Awards 2026. This collaborative initiative between UTU and UTP is expected to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in providing innovative and sustainable quality education.
