The celebration of the 81st Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia will be enlivened by a mass running event titled Merdeka Run 2026. A total of 8,000 runners are projected to crowd the eight-kilometer route in the heart of the capital city on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir stated that this event is designed to involve active community participation directly. According to him, the Merdeka Run has become one of the most anticipated recreational sports events by the public.
Scheduling the event on a Saturday was deliberately chosen by the organizers to avoid clashes with the Car Free Day, which usually takes place every Sunday. This is expected to minimize traffic impact while providing maximum comfort for the participants.
Not just a sporting event, Merdeka Run 2026 will also present an attractive visual concept. Erick revealed plans for a technological collaboration in the form of a drone show, combined with the appearance of participants who are encouraged to wear bright or neon colored clothing.
This event upholds the spirit of inclusivity by involving various elements of society, ranging from local residents, expatriates, public figures, ministers, national athletes, to people with disabilities. Starting at the National Monument (Monas) area and the Merdeka Palace, the route is designed to reflect the spirit of togetherness in celebrating the nation's historic day.
