Statistics Indonesia (BPS RI) is preparing to launch the 2026 Economic Census as a strategic instrument to capture the dynamics of the national economy amid accelerating digital transformation. This census, which is the fifth of its kind, is designed to capture fundamental changes in transaction patterns and rapidly evolving business models.
Chief Inspector of BPS RI, Dadang Hardiwan, stated that technology has brought significant shifts to various sectors, ranging from retail trade and cashless payment systems to digital investment. The existence of marketplaces and various online platforms has created a new business landscape that requires comprehensive data updates.
To ensure accuracy, BPS will implement a direct or door-to-door data collection method. This step is taken to reach business actors operating in the digital ecosystem as well as the informal sector, which is often difficult to identify through conventional data collection systems. The resulting data is expected to serve as a valid reference for the government in formulating targeted economic policies.
Dadang emphasized that the success of this national agenda depends on cross-sector collaboration. He appreciated the support of various parties, including the South Kalimantan Provincial Government, which has been proactive in socialization efforts, and the media, which plays a role as a strategic partner in increasing public awareness.
This census is mandated by Law Number 16 of 1997 concerning Statistics. Therefore, active participation from all business actors and stakeholders is crucial to presenting an accurate portrait of Indonesia's economy for sustainable future development.
