A large-scale study recently conducted by Loma Linda University in California highlighted a positive correlation between an egg-based diet and a reduced risk of neurodegenerative diseases in the elderly population.
Through the observation of 39,498 participants aged 65 and older over a 15-year period, researchers found a significant correlation where individuals who consumed about five eggs per week had a 27 percent lower risk of developing Alzheimer's compared to those who rarely consumed them. This finding applies to various cooking methods, whether boiled, scrambled, or as a component in other ingredients.
Nutrition expert Vandana Sheth explained that the secret of eggs' superiority lies in the complex nutrient content within the yolk, especially choline. This compound plays a crucial role in the body's production of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that is key to memory function and cognitive abilities. In addition, the lutein and zeaxanthin content in eggs is deemed capable of fighting oxidative stress that triggers brain function decline with age.
While showing promising results, researchers emphasize that eggs are not a standalone solution for disease prevention.
