Four hikers reported lost during a climb on Mount Lokon, Tomohon City, North Sulawesi, have finally been successfully evacuated safely. The joint Search and Rescue (SAR) team found the survivors at the mountain's summit early Sunday morning (2/8/2026) at around 04:05 WITA.
The incident began when the group of hikers was reported to have lost their way while heading to the summit on Saturday night (1/8/2026) at around 22:16 WITA. In response to the report, the Manado Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) immediately deployed a joint team to search the Mount Lokon climbing route.
After being found at the summit area, all the hikers were immediately evacuated down to the nearest post before finally being returned to their respective families. The Head of North Sulawesi Basarnas, George Mercy Randang, expressed his deep appreciation to all personnel who responded swiftly in this rescue operation.
Responding to the incident, George urged nature lovers to always prioritize safety before conducting outdoor activities. He emphasized the importance of physical preparation, adequate logistics, monitoring volcanic activity status, and avoiding climbing during bad weather.
In addition, Basarnas also reminded coastal communities and fishermen to remain vigilant against potential extreme weather in North Sulawesi waters. The El Niño phenomenon and the threat of the dry season, which can trigger drought, forest fires, and land fires, are also important concerns that must be anticipated together.
