Two young hikers, M. Rizki and Dika, were successfully evacuated safely after getting lost in the Mount Jantan area, Karimun Regency, Riau Islands. The incident began when the two went hiking on Thursday (9/7/2026) afternoon but lost their way as night fell.
Head of the Tanjungpinang Class A SAR Office, Fazzli, revealed that the two victims managed to provide information about their position around 9:00 PM WIB. However, communication was cut off shortly after because the victims' mobile phone ran out of battery, making it difficult to monitor their position in real-time.
Responding to the report, a rescue team from the Tanjung Balai Karimun SAR Post was immediately deployed to the location at 10:33 PM WIB. Given the dark and hard-to-reach terrain conditions, the SAR team implemented an intensive search strategy by utilizing thermal drone technology capable of detecting human body heat amidst the mountain vegetation.
These efforts yielded positive results in the early hours of Friday (10/7/2026). At around 12:40 AM WIB, the team found the two hikers safe at a location just about 50 meters from the main hiking trail. They were then immediately taken to the post for medical checkups before being handed back to their respective families.
The rescue operation was officially declared closed at 1:10 AM WIB after all victims were confirmed to have been safely evacuated. The SAR agency expressed high appreciation to all joint elements involved in this search mission for their synergy and rapid response in the field.
