The healthcare sector in Indonesia is undergoing a significant paradigm shift by relying on nuclear medicine technology as the forefront of medical diagnostics. This method allows medical professionals to monitor biological activity at the cellular level using radiopharmaceuticals, enabling abnormalities in the body to be detected long before physical symptoms appear.
This precision approach is considered crucial amid the rising trend of non-communicable diseases, especially cancer. According to data from the Global Cancer Observatory in 2022, Indonesia recorded more than 400,000 new cancer cases. In this context, nuclear technology serves as a solution to speed up detection time, which is a decisive factor in therapy success and also reduces the burden of treatment costs for patients.
Although it brings major changes to modern medicine, the equitable distribution of infrastructure remains a primary challenge. As of mid-2023, the Ministry of Health noted that nuclear medicine services were only available in 10 provinces, while radiotherapy facilities only reached 17 provinces across Indonesia.
These geographical conditions and limited facilities often force patients to travel long distances to receive timely treatment. Therefore, capacity building and the equitable distribution of nuclear technology are urgent agendas to create a more inclusive and responsive healthcare system for the wider community.
