A short video clip showing intense eruptive activity of Mount Anak Krakatau (GAK) has recently caught the public's attention on social media. In the 10-second footage, volcanic material is seen billowing high from the crater, accompanied by bursts of fire in the middle of the night, sparking widespread concern among netizens.
Responding to the uproar, Andi Suwardi, an officer at the Mount Anak Krakatau Monitoring Post, flatly denied the authenticity of the content. He emphasized that the circulating visuals do not represent the current condition of the volcano located in the Sunda Strait.
Based on monitoring data, the last eruptive activity was recorded on Friday at 15:00 WIB. Since then, no further eruptions of similar intensity to what is shown in the viral video have been observed. Nevertheless, Andi reminded that the status of Mount Anak Krakatau remains at Level III or Alert.
In line with this advisory, the Head of Public Relations of the Lampung Regional Police, Senior Commissioner Yuni Iswandari, urged the public not to be consumed by unverified information. She emphasized the importance of referring to official channels such as the Geological Agency, BMKG, and BPBD to obtain the latest updates in order to prevent panic in the community.
The police have also stepped up precautionary measures by activating the Aman Nusa Task Force and strengthening routine patrols through the Polairud Directorate in the waters of the Sunda Strait. Cross-sectoral synergy between the TNI, Polri, and local government continues to be tightened as a form of emergency preparedness.
To date, relevant authorities maintain a restriction zone within a three-kilometer radius of the crater center. All members of the public, including fishermen and tourists, are urged to comply with the recommendation to prioritize human safety amid the volcano's Alert status.
