Mount Semeru, which spans across the Lumajang and Malang regencies in East Java, showed volcanic activity again on Sunday (12/7/2026) afternoon. According to an official report from the Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center (PVMBG), the eruption was recorded precisely at 16:39 WIB.
Monitoring results showed a volcanic ash column rising approximately 800 meters above the peak. The ash material was observed to be white to gray with a fairly thick intensity, moving predominantly to the northeast and east. This seismic activity was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and lasted for 130 seconds.
Currently, Mount Semeru remains at Level III (Alert) status. Authorities emphasized that the public should not engage in any activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan within a 13-kilometer radius from the eruption center.
Additionally, residents are advised to maintain a safe distance of 500 meters from the riverbanks along Besuk Kobokan. This is a mitigation measure against the potential hazard of spreading pyroclastic flows and the threat of lahar flows that could reach up to 17 kilometers from the summit.
