Mount Semeru, located in Lumajang Regency, showed significant volcanic activity again on Friday (3/7/2026) morning. An official report from the Geological Agency recorded that the eruption occurred at exactly 07:29 WIB, spewing an ash column 1,100 meters above the peak, or reaching 4,776 meters above sea level.
Volcanic material consisting of white to gray ash of moderate intensity was observed moving towards the southern sector. Until this report was compiled, volcano observation officer Liswanto confirmed that the eruptive activity is still ongoing, indicating quite dynamic volcanic conditions on the highest mountain on the island of Java.
The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) immediately issued a safety warning for local residents and visitors. Residents are strictly prohibited from conducting any activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan within a 13-kilometer radius from the eruption center. In addition, a 5-kilometer radius from the crater has also been designated as an exclusion zone due to the high risk of incandescent rock ejection.
Furthermore, the public is advised to maintain a safe distance of 500 meters from the riverbanks along the flow originating from the peak of Semeru. Extra vigilance is highly necessary against secondary hazards such as pyroclastic flows, lava flows, and rain-triggered lahars that can occur at any time due to the ongoing eruptive activity.
