The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Management (BBTNBTS) has officially issued a policy to close the Mount Semeru hiking trails. This policy will be in effect for 12 days, from August 7 to August 18, 2026.
Head of BBTNBTS, Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha, explained that this closure aims to give space to the Tengger indigenous community to perform their series of Hari Raya Karo celebrations. All hiking activities up to the Ranu Kumbolo area must cease completely during this period, with the deadline for starting hikes set for Thursday, August 6, 2026.
All hikers are required to have finished their trips and returned to the Ranupani post by 16:00 WIB on Friday, August 7, 2026 at the latest. This step is taken out of respect for the sacred values of Hari Raya Karo, which symbolizes human origins and serves as an expression of gratitude from the Tengger people to the Creator.
Although the hiking trail to the summit of Semeru is closed, the management confirmed that the Ranu Regulo tourist area will remain open as normal for visitors wishing to camp. The public can still access visit ticketing services through the official BBTNBTS website.
The BBTNBTS urges all tourists to help maintain order and respect local customs during the celebration period. Support from visitors is highly anticipated so that the Tengger community's traditional activities can proceed solemnly and smoothly.
