The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority (BB TNBTS) has officially announced the temporary closure of all climbing access routes to Mount Semeru. This policy will be in effect for 12 days, from August 7 to August 18, 2026.
The decision was taken out of respect for the observance of Hari Raya Karo, a sacred annual traditional ceremony for the Tengger people in Ranupani Village, Lumajang Regency. BB TNBTS acted upon an official request from the Ranupani Village Government to ensure that the traditional rituals proceed solemnly.
Head of BB TNBTS, Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha, explained that the closure aims to maintain the sacredness of the tradition and ensure security and order for both local residents and ceremony participants. By halting climbing activities, potential disruptions stemming from interactions between tourists and traditional rituals can be better prevented.
For hikers, the deadline to start the trek is set for August 6, 2026. All hikers are required to have reached the Ranupani Post and left the hiking area no later than 16:00 WIB on August 7, 2026. The hiking trails are scheduled to resume normal operations on August 19, 2026.
Although hiking to the summit of Semeru is closed, BB TNBTS emphasized that the tourist area and camping ground at Ranu Regulo remain open to the public. Meanwhile, for hikers affected by this closure—especially those who had previously rescheduled due to volcanic eruptions—the management will facilitate another schedule adjustment through direct coordination with group leaders.
