A strategic collaboration between tech giant Samsung and Gwangmyeong Hospital, Chung-Ang University, South Korea, has successfully created a medical breakthrough using a smartwatch device. Utilizing Photoplethysmography (PPG) optical sensors, this wearable device now has the capability to predict vasovagal syncope attacks—a condition characterized by a sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure that often triggers loss of consciousness.
The main issue with vasovagal syncope is its sudden onset of symptoms, leaving patients vulnerable to secondary injuries such as head trauma or bone fractures. Through research published in European Heart Journal - Digital Health, the research team used a deep AI model trained on heart rate variability data from 132 patients. As a result, the system is capable of providing early warnings up to five minutes before a person faints.
That five-minute duration serves as a crucial factor for users to take preventive measures, such as immediately finding a seat or asking for help. Based on clinical studies, this technology achieves an accuracy rate of 84.6% with a sensitivity of 90%, proving that commercial devices now possess significant medical capabilities in providing proactive protection to their users.
Professor Junhwan Cho, a cardiologist at Gwangmyeong Hospital, emphasized that this technology is highly relevant given that around 40% of the world's population has experienced fainting. This innovation not only has the potential to reduce fall-related injuries but also fundamentally changes the healthcare paradigm from a passive to a proactive approach.
This shift marks the end of the conventional health monitoring era that required patients to be in medical facilities. Now, the integration of real-time biological data and intelligent algorithms on wrist-worn devices enables individuals to have a 'digital doctor' that continuously monitors neurological and cardiovascular conditions around the clock.
