The international construction world was once astonished by an ingenious breakthrough from Indonesia known as Sosrobahu Technology. This innovation was the brilliant brainchild of the late Ir. Tjokorda Raka Sukawati, a civil engineer alumnus of the Bandung Institute of Technology who dedicated his life to advancing national infrastructure.

The roots of this invention trace back to the challenges faced during the construction of the Cawang-Tanjung Priok toll road in the late 1980s. At the time, Tjokorda faced a major dilemma: how to build elevated road pillars amidst Jakarta's heavy traffic flow without causing severe gridlock due to road closures.

Inspiration unexpectedly struck while Tjokorda was repairing his car. He observed how a hydraulic jack could lift a heavy weight, and with the help of spilled oil making the surface slick, the car body could rotate on a specific axis. He then combined this simple phenomenon with Pascal's Law to create a revolutionary hydraulic rotating platform system.

Through the 'Sukawati Formula', Tjokorda successfully created a mechanism where concrete pier heads could be cast parallel to the road, and then rotated 90 degrees into the correct position once dry. This method allowed construction to proceed efficiently without blocking vehicle traffic below—a solution that significantly cut both costs and construction time.

The success of this technology was not only recognized domestically but was also widely adopted in various countries such as the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore. Furthermore, the use of this technology was key to the success of large-scale projects like the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed (MBZ) Elevated Toll Road in Indonesia.

Tjokorda Raka Sukawati's intellectual legacy proves that national creativity can solve complex civil engineering challenges on a global scale. To this day, Sosrobahu remains a symbol of Indonesian pride in advancing world infrastructure civilization through practical and visionary innovation.
