The Chairman of the KONI DKI Jakarta Province, Prof. Dr. Hidayat Humaid, M.Pd., stated that the sport of archery has a golden opportunity to become a flagship sector for Indonesia on the international stage. Hidayat expressed this view during an academic lecture following his inauguration as a Professor in Archery Coaching Science at the State University of Jakarta (UNJ) on Thursday (9/7).
In his speech titled "Indonesian Archery Achievements on the World Stage," Hidayat highlighted the proud historical record when Indonesia's trio of heroines, Nurfitriyana Saiman, Kusuma Wardhani, and Lilies Handayani, won a silver medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. This historic achievement remains the only Olympic medal ever contributed by the archery discipline for the nation.
Hidayat explained that determining strategic sports disciplines must be based on alignment among demographic potential, institutional capacity, and competitive opportunities at the global level. According to him, archery is a very rational choice for Indonesia because it requires high precision with relatively moderate infrastructure support, making it highly relevant to the National Sports Grand Design framework.
Furthermore, Hidayat emphasized the importance of sustainable development so that archery does not merely participate, but becomes a serious contender in various world championships. Strengthening this sports ecosystem is expected to optimize existing human resources to produce high-performing athletes in the future.
The inauguration ceremony also marked the conferment of full professorships to two other academics at UNJ, namely Prof. Dr. Wesnina, M.Sn. in Fashion Design and Prof. Dr. Imam Basori, M.T. in Metallurgical Engineering. In closing his address, Hidayat dedicated his academic achievement to his family and his late parents.
