BYD (Build Your Dreams), a leading automotive manufacturer from Shenzhen, China, is cementing its position as a global pioneer in eco-friendly vehicle technology with a focus on Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs). Since launching the F3DM sedan as the world's first mass-produced PHEV in December 2008, BYD has consistently championed an electric-first philosophy. Under this approach, the electric battery acts as the primary power source before the internal combustion engine takes over to maintain efficiency.
The identity of BYD's hybrid technology is recognized through the "DM" or Dual-Mode label. Unlike competitors who generally began their transition with conventional Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) technology, BYD shook up the market directly with a PHEV system that can be externally charged using an electrical outlet. This bold step has been continuously refined, leading to the creation of the DM-i variant, which is now being introduced to the Indonesian automotive market through the M6 DM-i MPV model.
The journey of DM technology innovation is divided into five evolutionary phases. In the first generation, the F3DM was capable of covering 60 kilometers in pure electric mode and a total of 480 kilometers in combined mode. Although commercially less successful with cumulative sales of around 3,284 units until the end of its production run in 2013, this model served as a crucial foundation for BYD's subsequent eco-friendly technology development.
Entering the second (2013) and third (2018) generations, BYD's focus shifted toward a more aggressive performance boost by introducing dual-motor configurations to popular product lines such as the Qin, Tang, and Song DM. These efforts yielded impressive acceleration capabilities, allowing vehicles to sprint from a standstill to 100 km/h in less than five seconds.
A significant commercial turning point occurred with the launch of the fourth generation in 2021. BYD split its hybrid technology into two specific pathways: DM-i, which prioritizes optimal energy efficiency, and DM-p, which emphasizes dynamic driving performance. This differentiation strategy successfully triggered a massive surge in sales, especially in the domestic Chinese market.
Currently, DM technology has reached its fifth generation, breaking the global engine thermal efficiency record at 46.06 percent. With fuel consumption claimed to reach 65 kilometers per liter, latest-generation vehicles like the Qin L DM-i can cover a total range of over 1,800 kilometers, even surpassing 2,000 kilometers in internal testing on a single full charge and tank of fuel. This efficiency also significantly reduces vehicle operating costs to the equivalent of IDR 300 per kilometer.
