PT Perusahaan Gas Negara (Persero) Tbk (PGN) reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening operational transparency by inviting retail investors to directly inspect natural gas infrastructure facilities in North Sumatra. This strategic step was taken to provide a real picture of supply reliability and the natural gas market development plans currently being carried out by the company in the Sumatra and Riau Islands regions.
As of April 2026, PGN through Sales and Operation Region I (SOR I) recorded a gas distribution of 147 BBTUD to more than 136 thousand customers. PGN's Director of Infrastructure and Technology, Heri Murahmanta, stated that this region has strong market diversification, ranging from the large-scale industrial sector in Batam to high customer penetration in Medan and Palembang. This combination is claimed to be the key to maintaining the company's business sustainability.
In supporting long-term expansion, PGN strongly supports the North Sumatra-Riau (Sutri) Transmission Pipeline project initiated by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM). This pipeline network is projected to become the backbone of connectivity connecting the northern, central, and southern regions of Sumatra. This integration is expected to provide PGN with high flexibility in managing supply from various domestic sources, including gas from upstream blocks and Arun LNG regasification.
Currently, PGN operates a pipeline network of approximately 1,834 kilometers, supported by various supporting facilities such as offtake stations. PGN does not only rely on the pipeline network, but also integrates non-pipeline distribution modes such as CNG and LNG to ensure wider service coverage for the power, industrial, and household sectors.
Heri added that with a system that is increasingly connected and efficient, the company is optimistic about capturing rapid economic growth opportunities in Sumatra and the Riau Islands. This strategy is expected to not only secure domestic energy supplies but also provide sustainable added value for PGN's stakeholders and shareholders in the future.
