The main focus of this collaboration includes technology transfer, infrastructure investment, and capacity building of domestic shipyards to address the challenges of logistical needs in the archipelagic nation.
Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, stated that this collaboration serves as a catalyst for the modernization of the national shipbuilding industry. By leveraging Russia's globally proven technological advantages, Indonesia aims to enhance its competitiveness in the Southeast Asian shipping market while strengthening inter-island connectivity.
As a country with over 17,000 islands, the maritime sector is the backbone of Indonesia's economy, vital for logistics distribution, fisheries, and offshore energy. This synergy is seen as a timely step because it can integrate massive domestic demand with Russian technical expertise in ship design, advanced propulsion systems, and complex marine engineering.
The opportunity for this collaboration has widened further following the Free Trade Agreement between Indonesia and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). In a forum in Yekaterinburg, a representative of the Ministry of Industry emphasized that the alignment between Indonesia's market potential and Russia's technological advantages forms a strong foundation to create significant value-add for the independence of the national maritime industry.
