Diponegoro University (UNDIP) is taking a step forward in supporting the transition to low-carbon energy through a strategic collaboration with industrial partners in Batang Regency, Central Java. Since March 2026, both parties have been implementing catalytic pyrolysis technology to process non-organic plastic waste into more environmentally friendly liquid fuel.

This project involves academics from UNDIP's Department of Chemical Engineering focusing on reactor development and zeolite-based catalyst synthesis. Meanwhile, PT Dahana Solusi Inovasi acts as the field partner providing infrastructure, plastic raw material supply, and operational support. This synergy is designed to move research innovation from a laboratory scale to real industrial application.

The head of the UNDIP research team, Prof. Didi Dwi Anggoro, explained that the development of this technology includes transitioning from a static reactor to a rotary reactor to improve thermal conversion efficiency. This innovation is claimed to be capable of producing pyrolysis oil with a yield of up to 75 percent, which meets technical standards for use as a commercial alternative fuel.

From an environmental perspective, this program provides a concrete solution to the accumulation of plastic waste that has been burdening final processing sites. In addition to reducing waste, this operation also drives the creation of a circular economy ecosystem for the surrounding community through the creation of new jobs, ranging from waste collection to operational stages at the plant facility.

The Director of PT Dahana Solusi Inovasi, Agni Sakti, expressed readiness to commercialize this technology on a larger scale. This step is expected to help local industries cut production costs while minimizing carbon emissions, aligning with the university's commitment to meeting sustainable development goals (SDGs) related to clean energy, industrial innovation, and responsible consumption.
