Minister of Culture Fadli Zon has spoken out regarding the buzz on social media about the pilgrimage rituals at Gunung Kawi, Malang Regency. The phenomenon, often associated with mystical narratives or "pesugihan" (wealth-seeking) rituals, is viewed by Fadli as a reality of old traditions that form part of Indonesia's cultural diversity mosaic.
According to Fadli, the pilgrimage activity cannot be immediately judged negatively. As long as the activities taking place do not break the law, cause damage, or disrupt the public interest, the government views it as a social dynamic. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of the economic aspects arising from the pilgrimage activities, which provide tangible benefits for the welfare of the community around the area.
In line with this view, the Regent of Malang, Rendra Kresna, also highly appreciated the innovation of the residents of the Gunung Kawi Tourism Village. Through traditions such as the "Gebyar Kirab 1 Suro" (1st of Suro Parade), the local community is deemed successful in packaging religious tourism that attracts both domestic and foreign tourists. According to him, the residents' consistency in maintaining harmony through cultural activities should serve as an example for other regions.
The Malang Regency Government is committed to providing full support through the development of infrastructure and supporting facilities in the area. Rendra mentioned that a tourism budget has been prepared to maximize the potential of Gunung Kawi as a leading tourist destination. His administration hopes that the ritual events will not just be routine ceremonies, but will also leave a deep impression and moral message on every visitor who comes.
In the "Gebyar Kirab 1 Suro" which involved thousands of participants and visitors, various traditional arts were also displayed, including traditional dances by hundreds of female dancers. This effort to integrate the preservation of customs and the development of the tourism industry is expected to continue to increase tourist visits while maintaining the existence of local culture on the national stage.
