The city of Batam faces serious challenges regarding the mental health of its residents throughout 2026. Based on data up to mid-year, over a dozen suicide cases have been reported, a phenomenon that has prompted calls for the public to pay greater attention to the psychological well-being of those around them.

Psychologist Irfan Aulia explained that such fatal acts rarely occur suddenly. Typically, individuals have harbored an accumulated psychological burden over a significant period. Various triggers, ranging from pressing economic pressures, family conflicts, to workplace problems, often serve as the root causes exacerbating a person's mental condition.

According to Irfan, individuals at a crisis point tend to get trapped in repetitive negative thought patterns. They often feel isolated, hopeless, and convinced that there is no way out of the problems they are facing. Feelings of loneliness and the lack of a safe space to share become catalysts that accelerate the decline of mental health.

As a preventive measure, Irfan emphasized the importance of seeking professional help or reaching out to a trusted person as soon as symptoms are felt. Social support in the form of an empathetic, non-judgmental listener has proven to be a crucial element in preventing desperate acts. An environment capable of providing safety and comfort can help someone navigate their lowest points and regain the hope to persevere.
