The Banglas Barat Cup II Volleyball Tournament has officially commenced in Banglas Barat Village, Tebing Tinggi District. The sports competition, featuring 44 teams from various areas in the Meranti Islands Regency, was officially opened on Saturday (1/8/2026), as part of the region's commitment to scouting high-achieving local athletic talent.
Representing the Regent of Meranti Islands, the Head of the Youth, Sports, and Tourism Department (Dispora), Saiful Bakhri, expressed deep appreciation for the initiation of this tournament. He emphasized that this event is not merely a platform for physical competition, but a strategic venue to strengthen unity and build positive character among the youth.
Interestingly, this year's competition system implements a semi-open concept, requiring the majority of players to come from the local district, with a waiver for only one player from outside the region. This rule is intentionally designed to maximize local potential while maintaining an even quality of sports development at the grassroots level.
The Chairperson of the Organizing Committee, Ade Irawan, revealed that the enthusiasm of the local volleyball community continues to show a positive trend. This competition is also aligned with various youth development programs, including supporting campaigns against illicit drug trafficking through the Anti-Drug Resilient Village initiative.
In addition to its impact on the sports sector, the microeconomic circulation around the match venue is also projected to increase along with high spectator attendance. The local government hopes that the conducive atmosphere and high sportsmanship maintained during the tournament can produce resilient talents ready to compete at both regional and national levels.
