Dharma Wanita Persatuan (DWP) of Samudra University (Unsam) is committed to strengthening the family defense fortress in the digital era. This is realized through the active participation of the Unsam DWP management in a national seminar titled "The Digital Childhood: Creating a Safe, Inclusive, and Supportive Space for Children's Growth Amid the Wave of Modern Technology," held online on Tuesday (28/7/2026).
This collaboration between the DWP of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemdiktisaintek) and the Family Women's Association of the University of Indonesia (IWK UI) was held to commemorate National Children's Day 2026. This strategic agenda was attended by DWP representatives from state universities and Higher Education Service Institutions (LLDIKTI) from all over Indonesia.
In the educational session, psychologist Prof. Dr. Rose Mini, A.S., M.Si., emphasized that technology is actually a very beneficial tool for children's growth and development, provided it is used appropriately. She highlighted the importance of parents' active role in filtering content, setting limits on gadget use (screen time), and utilizing child safety features (parental controls).
Prof. Rose Mini also warned of the negative impacts of gadget dependency, ranging from unstable emotional changes (tantrums) to decreased empathy and self-control in children. To anticipate this, parents are urged to instill seven core moral pillars from an early age: empathy, self-control, conscience, kindness, fairness, tolerance, and respect.
The Chairperson of Samudra University's DWP, Cut Henny Marlinda, stated that the insights from this seminar are crucial for mothers in guiding their children. According to her, digital literacy is no longer just an option, but a fundamental necessity for parents to act as navigators for their children in the challenging virtual world.
Cut Henny also urged parents within the Unsam community not to simply provide technology facilities without supervision. She emphasized the importance of parents' physical and emotional presence in building healthy two-way communication, enabling children to utilize the digital space safely, creatively, and productively.
