A solemn atmosphere enveloped the foot of Mount Semeru, specifically in Senduro District, Lumajang, East Java, on Sunday (29/6). Thousands of Hindus gathered to perform the Peak of Karya Pujawalikrama at Pura Mandara Giri Semeru Agung, a spiritual moment representing profound devotion to Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa.
The sacred procession, which coincided with 15 Kasa 1948 Saka, was collaboratively led by Romo Pandhita Dukun Tengger and Sulinggih (high priests) from Bali. The synergy between spiritual leaders from both regions serves as a tangible symbol of unity among Nusantara Hindus, preserving diverse traditions within the framework of Dharma teachings.
The nuances of cultural acculturation were deeply felt throughout the series of ceremonies. Harmonization occurred through side-by-side Javanese and Balinese wayang (puppet theater) art performances, accompanied by gamelan rhythms from two distinct traditions. This artistic offering aimed not only at ritual fulfillment but also as a deep tribute to the nation's ancestral heritage.
The Chairman of the Indonesian Hindu Religious Council (PHDI) of Lumajang Regency, Teguh Widodo, emphasized that this Pujawalikrama transcends a mere religious agenda. For him, the event is a stage of unity bringing together prayers, customs, and devotion from across the nation, while demonstrating the resilience of Nusantara Hinduism in maintaining spiritual values and cultural preservation.
The entire sequence of processions at Pura Mandara Giri Semeru Agung is scheduled to run until the penyineban (closing ritual) stage on July 10, 2026. Until its conclusion, this event continues to serve as a gathering space that strengthens brotherhood among Hindus from various regions across Indonesia.
