Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Services, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, declared full support for the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) to conduct an independent investigation into violent incidents against civilians in Papua. This step was taken by the government to ensure accountability in addressing the intensifying armed conflict.
Yusril stressed that the government will not turn a blind eye to civilian casualties, including the tragic death of a pregnant woman during a crossfire. According to him, the investigation must proceed objectively to determine whether the projectiles originated from armed groups or security forces. In addition to internal investigations by the TNI and Polri, recommendations from Komnas HAM will serve as material for government evaluation.
Echoing these sentiments, Komnas HAM Chairperson Anis Hidayah urged all warring parties to immediately enter into a ceasefire. Anis emphasized that civilians are the most vulnerable group in any conflict escalation. She highlighted the importance of transparent and fair law enforcement to restore the rights of victims and affected families.
The escalation of conflict in Papua flared up following the shooting of an American pioneer plane pilot from PT AMA in Yahukimo, as well as a firefight in Intan Jaya that resulted in the deaths of a pregnant woman and her baby. Up to now, security forces continue to conduct special operations to stabilize the situation in affected areas to prevent further casualties.
