The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) has officially issued a stern warning for the public, fishermen, and tourists to stay away from the Mount Anak Krakatau area. This step was taken following the escalation of the volcano's status from Level II (Watch) to Level III (Alert) since July 2, 2026.
An officer at the Mount Anak Krakatau Volcano Observation Post, Anggi Nuryo Saputro, explained that the decision was based on an in-depth evaluation of volcanic dynamics in the Sunda Strait. Two eruptions have been recorded with ash columns reaching up to 200 meters above the crater peak since the status was raised.
In accordance with official recommendations, all parties are urged not to conduct any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the crater center. The prohibition, which had previously been in effect under the Watch status, is now reinforced given the continuous increase in the volcano's activity intensity.
Regarding the transportation sector, PVMBG confirmed that shipping operations in the waters around the Sunda Strait are still running normally so far. Nevertheless, monitoring of potential volcanic ash distribution continues to ensure flight path safety remains maintained.
The public is asked to remain calm and not be provoked by unverified information on social media. PVMBG emphasized that official updates regarding the condition of Mount Anak Krakatau can be accessed via the MAGMA Indonesia application or official communication channels of related government agencies.
