The mountainous region of Bondowoso has once again claimed lives. Two hikers who were reported missing while exploring Mount Piramid in Curahdami District, Bondowoso Regency, East Java, were finally found dead on Tuesday (4/8/2026). The discovery of the victims' bodies brought an end to intensive search efforts after the pair began their climb on Sunday (2/8/2026).
The two victims were identified as Maliya Finda (51), a tourist from Surabaya, and Irfan Nasrul Laili (35), a local guide from Traktakan Village, Wonosari District, Bondowoso. Bondowoso Police Chief, AKBP Aryo Dwi Wibowo, confirmed that the victims' bodies were found around 1:00 PM WIB at the bottom of a ravine in the Punggung Naga (Dragon's Back) area, which reaches a depth of 60 meters. When found, the two bodies were caught in tree branches about five meters apart.
The joint SAR team immediately moved to the steep location to evacuate the victims. The extreme terrain of Mount Piramid, known for its narrow and steep paths, posed a significant challenge for the rescue team during the evacuation process.
Responding to this heartbreaking incident, Andre Hariyanto, founder of the nature lovers community Persatuan Kelana Alam Indonesia (PKAI), expressed his deepest condolences. He urged hikers, both beginners and professionals, to always prioritize safety above all else and not to push themselves to reach the summit if weather or physical conditions are not favorable.
