Volcanic activity at Mount Karangetang in the Sitaro Islands Regency showed an increase once again on Sunday (12/7/2026). The volcano reportedly experienced a small explosive eruption, sparking concern among communities living around the slope area.
The Head of the Emergency Division of the Sitaro Islands Regency BPBD, Sonny Belseran, explained that a loud boom was heard from the direction of the summit at exactly 19:14 WITA. The eruption spewed volcanic material to a height of 300 to 400 meters from the northern crater. As a result of the ejection of hot material, vegetation around the summit was reportedly set on fire, creating a glow that was clearly visible in the night sky.
Monitoring data shows that the eruptive material flowed to the northwest, reaching a distance of 700 to 1,000 meters, brushing through the area between the Batu Bulan and Kawahang rivers. Although activity appears to be increasing, authorities stated that the status of Mount Karangetang currently remains at Level II (Alert).
In response to these conditions, the Sitaro BPBD has strictly urged the public, especially residents living near river basins originating at the volcano's summit, to remain vigilant. The local government has also prohibited residents from approaching the summit crater and lava flow areas for their own safety.
The public is urged not to be easily provoked by unverified information and to continue following official directives from the Sitaro Islands Regency BPBD. Vigilance must be increased, especially during the night, when the potential dangers of volcanic activity are often less visible to the naked eye.
