Volcanic activity at Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, showed another significant increase on Sunday (5/7/2026). The volcano, which is currently at Level III (Alert) status, was recorded erupting twice in close succession in the morning.
The first eruption occurred at 07:04 WITA, spewing a column of gray ash 1,400 meters high to the north and northeast. This phenomenon was recorded on the seismogram with a duration of 74 seconds and a maximum amplitude of 47.3 millimeters.
A few hours later, at precisely 09:20 WITA, the volcano erupted again with greater intensity. An officer at the Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Volcano Observation Post (PGA), Aji Putra Mahendra, reported that the column of volcanic ash this time reached a height of 1,500 meters above the peak, or about 3,084 meters above sea level. The thick gray ash was moving towards the west and northwest.
In response to this increased activity, authorities reiterated the ban on residents and tourists from engaging in any activities within a 5-kilometer radius from the eruption center. The public is also urged to proactively use masks or respiratory protection to minimize the health impacts of exposure to the thick volcanic ash.
