Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) has officially established a strategic collaboration with Chinese medical technology giant, Shanghai Microport MedBot (Group) Co., Ltd. This cooperation focuses on the development of research and innovation in the field of medical robotics to support the modernization of healthcare services in Indonesia.
This partnership was formalized through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the ITB Campus, Bandung, West Java, on Wednesday (29/7/2026). The scope of this collaboration covers the implementation of joint research programs to the initiation of establishing a cutting-edge technology-based health research center.
ITB Vice Rector for Research and Innovation, Lavi Rizki Zuhal, explained that this collaboration is highly relevant to ITB's long-term vision in strengthening the health science and technology ecosystem. The campus expressed its readiness to produce robotic innovations capable of concretely addressing domestic medical needs.
This tactical step is also considered in line with the Indonesian government's agenda to accelerate the transformation of national health technology, one of which is the implementation of robotic systems for surgical procedures. The presence of Shanghai Microport MedBot is expected to accelerate technology transfer, given their global reputation in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and telesurgery.
Meanwhile, the Director of Shanghai Microport MedBot, Chao He, expressed his optimism regarding Indonesia's great potential in adopting future surgical technologies. According to him, the combination of ITB's engineering expertise and MedBot's technology portfolio will serve as a strong foundation for the birth of new breakthroughs in the health sector.
