Mount Semeru, located in East Java, reportedly erupted again on Friday (12/6/2026) morning at 05:12 WIB. Based on data from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia system, visual observation of the eruption was not possible due to weather conditions around the mountain peak.
As of now, Mount Semeru's activity status remains at Level III (Alert). Seismic records show relatively high activity, with 20 eruption earthquakes recorded with significant amplitude during the previous night's observation period. In addition to eruption earthquakes, the highest volcano on Java Island also continues to show rockfall and gust earthquake activity.
Data shows that over the past week, Mount Semeru has erupted 49 times. This phenomenon makes Semeru the volcano with the highest eruption intensity in Indonesia in 2026, totaling 1,238 eruptions out of 2,562 volcanic eruptions recorded nationwide.
In response to this situation, PVMBG issued strict recommendations for the public and climbers. Activities are prohibited in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan, within a 13-kilometer radius from the eruption center. In addition, residents are asked not to conduct activities within a 500-meter radius of the riverbanks along Besuk Kobokan to avoid the risk of pyroclastic density currents and cold lava flows, which could reach up to 17 kilometers.
