Following up on a street crime incident involving violent theft against a student, the Tarakan Resort Police (Polres) teamed up with several local community organizations (ormas) to conduct a joint patrol in the Gunung Selatan area on Thursday night (23/7/2026). This preventive measure was taken to suppress crime rates and restore public comfort, which had been temporarily disrupted.

Police personnel along with members from various community organizations were seen combing through vulnerable spots along Jalan Gunung Selatan. This location has recently drawn public attention following a mugging accompanied by a stabbing the previous night. The presence of this joint patrol is expected to restrict the movement of criminals.

The Chairman of Laskar Borneo Bersatu (LBB) Tarakan, Ricky Febriansyah, explained that the involvement of civil society elements in this patrol is a concrete manifestation of care to help law enforcement agencies maintain public order and security (kamtibmas). This synergy also proves that the community is ready to support the creation of a conducive environment in the Tarakan area.

In addition to conducting field monitoring, Ricky also highlighted the importance of adding public street lighting (PJU) facilities along the Gunung Selatan area. He hopes the local government will respond quickly by installing lights in areas that remain dark, as low-light areas are often exploited by criminals. Residents are also urged to remain calm but increase vigilance.

Echoing these sentiments, the Secretary of the Tarakan City LPADKT Branch Office (DPC), Charles, stated that this street action stems from social concern to protect the safety of commuters, students, and workers who routinely traverse this route. He advised motorists, especially at night, to avoid traveling alone and to utilize the National Police's 110 Call Center emergency service if they encounter anything suspicious.

This collaborative patrol was attended by various local indigenous and youth community organization alliances, including LPADKT, Tameng Adat Borneo, Pusaka, LBB, Aliansi Serumpun, Yayasan Lembaga Budaya Dayak Tidung Bersatu, Gepak, Jubah Hitam, Pasukan Merah Nusantara, and Perpedayak. Meanwhile, the street violence case that triggered this action is currently under intensive investigation by the Tarakan Police Criminal Investigation Unit (Satreskrim).
