The Indonesian government under the leadership of President Prabowo Subianto has reaffirmed its commitment to comprehensively strengthening the National Narcotics Board (BNN). This strategic step includes increasing budget allocations and providing state-of-the-art technology to eradicate illicit drug trafficking in the country.
The President's mandate was delivered by the Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs (Menko Polkam), Djamari Chaniago, while attending the commemoration of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking held in Lido, Bogor, West Java, on Thursday (23/7/2026).
In his speech, the President highlighted the major challenges Indonesia faces due to its geographical conditions. Situated at the crossroads of two continents and two oceans with a long coastline and thousands of islands, Indonesia is considered highly vulnerable to drug smuggling through various illegal entry points.
This geographical vulnerability is often exploited by international drug syndicates to supply these illicit substances to all corners of the country. Therefore, Prabowo emphasized that BNN must not be left to work with limited facilities and infrastructure in facing this global threat.
To win the war against drugs, the government promises to provide total reinforcement, which includes reforming the legal framework, building BNN infrastructure in the regions, and procuring more modern tactical intelligence equipment. Improving human resource capacity and ensuring adequate budget support are also top priorities to ensure that drug eradication runs effectively even to the outermost regions.
