Content creator and public figure Denny Sumargo has provided an in-depth clarification regarding the discussion of Mount Kawi in one of his podcast episodes, which had sparked heated conversations online. This step was taken not to perpetuate the “pesugihan” myth, but rather to rectify the public’s biased views toward the area.
Denny revealed that the initiative to raise this topic stemmed from complaints by local residents who felt uncomfortable with the negative image attached to their home. The local community felt disadvantaged because the entire Mount Kawi region is often generalized as a hub for mystical rituals to obtain instant wealth.
When met in the West Jakarta area on Wednesday (15/7/2026), Denny explained that local residents feel their region is one of the most subject to misconceptions. In fact, social life and the natural landscape there are not entirely related to the mystical practices widely imagined by the public.
Nevertheless, the former national basketball athlete did not deny the existence of “pesugihan” activities carried out by certain individuals at specific spots. However, he emphasized the importance of objectivity so that the public does not make generalizations that harm the local population as a whole.
Through his podcast, Denny hopes to bridge the voices of local residents while presenting a fairer and more balanced perspective. In this way, the bad stigma that has long overshadowed Mount Kawi can gradually erode and be replaced by a more accurate understanding.
