Social media has recently been abuzz with the circulation of a video recording depicting a violent eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau. The video, filmed from the perspective of a ship, briefly caused anxiety, particularly among residents living in the coastal areas of the Sunda Strait.
Following an in-depth verification, relevant authorities confirmed that the content is misleading information or a hoax. The video circulating widely across various digital platforms is not documentation of the latest volcanic activity of the volcano located in the waters of the Sunda Strait.
The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), through an official statement, explained that Mount Anak Krakatau did record eruption activity in early July 2026, specifically on July 2 and 3. However, the eruption characteristics recorded in the viral video differ significantly from the visual data monitored officially by field officers.
For context, Mount Anak Krakatau is an active Type A volcano closely monitored by observation posts in Kalianda, South Lampung, and Pasauran, Banten. Although the volcano has a significant eruption history, including a tsunami event in December 2018, its current condition remains in an eruptive pause.
Authorities urge the public to remain calm and not be easily provoked by unverified posts. The public is advised to always refer to official information channels of the Geological Agency to obtain accurate data regarding the status and volcanic activity of Mount Anak Krakatau.
