The 2026 World Cup round of 16 has left deep drama for the participants. A total of six national teams have been confirmed to pack their bags after suffering defeats in their crucial matches, including the elimination of hosts United States, who fell 1-4 to Belgium at Seattle Stadium on Tuesday (7/7).
The United States' defeat further underscores the negative trend for the tournament hosts, considering all host nations have now been officially eliminated from the competition. In that match, Belgium dominated thanks to a brace from Charles De Ketelaere, along with additional goals from Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku, while the hosts' sole consolation goal was scored by Malik Tillman.
Previously, a series of big teams and favorites had already ended their journey earlier. Brazil shockingly fell 1-2 to Norway, while Portugal had to accept their elimination after a dramatic loss to Spain. Additionally, the runs of Canada, Mexico, and Paraguay were also halted at the same stage.
To date, the competition in the round of 16 still has two deciding matches left. Argentina is scheduled to face Egypt, while Switzerland will play Colombia to vie for the remaining tickets to the quarter-finals. Here is the list of the six teams that have been eliminated: Canada, Paraguay, Brazil, Mexico, Portugal, and the United States.
