The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) Great Hall has officially issued an instruction for the temporary closure of all climbing access routes to Mount Semeru. This policy will be effective from August 7 to 18, 2026.
The decision is stated in Announcement Letter Number PG.16/T.8/TU/HMS.01.08/B/07/2026, issued in response to a request from the Ranupani Village Government, Lumajang Regency. This step was taken as a sign of respect from the national park management towards the sacred observance of Hari Raya Karo by the Tengger indigenous community.
Head of the TNBTS Great Hall, Rudijanta Tjahjah Nugraha, explained that during the closure period, all climbing activities to the summit of Semeru are completely suspended. However, the management will still provide access to tourists wishing to visit the Ranu Regulo area, which will operate normally for tourism and camping activities.
For prospective climbers affected by this closure—especially those scheduled to climb during Hari Raya Karo or holders of rescheduled slots from the 2025 eruption—the management is providing a rescheduling facility. Information regarding the rescheduling mechanism will be communicated directly via WhatsApp to the group leader registered in the official ticket booking system.
The TNBTS authority urges all stakeholders, tourism service providers, and the general public to wisely comply with this policy. The closure is expected to preserve the solemnity of the local indigenous rituals while maintaining order within the conservation area during the celebration period.
