Politeknik Perkapalan Negeri Surabaya (PPNS), through its Waste Treatment Engineering Study Program, officially launched a 3R (Reuse, Reduce, Recycle)-based organic waste management initiative in the Taruna IV Area, Kalijudan Village. This program is part of a community service effort supported by the Operational Assistance for State Universities for Research and Community Service (BIMA) funding.
Leader of the PPNS Community Service Team, Vivin Setiani, explained that this initiative aims to equip residents with technical skills to transform household waste into economically valuable products. She hopes this pilot project in Kalijudan can inspire other areas to adopt a self-reliant waste management culture and a circular economy.
During the series of activities, residents were taught Black Soldier Fly (BSF) utilization methods. The community service team provided comprehensive guidance, starting from sorting and shredding waste using specialized machinery, to creating natural activators from leftover rice, and the final processing phase inside BSF tray reactors.
To ensure the program's sustainability, PPNS provided aid in the form of shredder machines, maggot composters, analytical balances, and practical guidebooks to local residents. These facilities are expected to become primary tools for the community to practice more effective waste management within households.
The Kalijudan Village administration warmly welcomed this step. Piping Minovia, Head of the Welfare and Economy Section of Kalijudan Village, stated that BSF maggot technology serves as a real solution that not only reduces waste volume at temporary disposal sites (TPS), but also has the potential to enhance family economic welfare through productive waste management.
