The Sports Development Institute (LPO) of the Central Board of Muhammadiyah has officially forged a synergy with the All-Indonesia Walking Football Association (Persejasi) to popularize walking football. This strategic initiative targets people aged 50 and above in an effort to maintain fitness in old age through safe physical activity.

The meeting held in Yogyakarta on Friday (3/7/2026) targeted the formation of 1,000 walking football communities across the country. This ambitious target will be achieved by utilizing Muhammadiyah's extensive infrastructure, ranging from universities and schools to its hospital network spread across various regions.

Rector of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), Prof. Dr. Achmad Nurmandi, M.Sc., emphasized that Muhammadiyah's organizational network is a crucial asset in accelerating the adoption of this sport. According to him, many Muhammadiyah members have a keen interest in football but require adjustments in game intensity matching their current physical condition.

Persejasi Chairman, Hendra Hartono, explained that this sport was born as a solution to the high health risks faced by seniors who push themselves to play conventional football. With adapted rules, walking football is expected to be a means to increase the Sports Development Index (IPO) as well as a medium of proselytization (dakwah) in building a healthy living culture within the community.

In addition to focusing on health, this collaboration also encompasses education and competition aspects. Both parties plan to host the Muhammadiyah Walking Football Championship as a preparation event leading to the National Recreational Sports Festival (FORNAS). Looking ahead, the network of Special Branch Offices of Muhammadiyah (PCIM) abroad is even projected to introduce this sport on the international stage.
