The Mayor of Bandung, Muhammad Farhan, emphasized that an ideal sports ecosystem must be built comprehensively. According to him, these efforts must begin with instilling a sports culture within society as the upstream, leading to peak achievements at the international level as the downstream.
Farhan made these remarks when opening Series IV of the Indonesian Taekwondo Executive Board (PBTI) National Championship at GOR Bandung Arena on Saturday (4/7/2026). He cited the success of talent development in Bandung City, which has contributed two taekwondo athletes to the national training center (pelatnas) in preparation for the Olympics.
Trusting Bandung City as the host of this prestigious event was positively received by the central board. Vice General Chairman of PBTI, Major General TNI Amrin Ibrahim, mentioned that the championship in Bandung set a record for the highest number of participants, reaching 1,700 athletes from 18 provinces, including the participation of para-taekwondo athletes.
"The support of facilities and enthusiasm in Bandung City is extraordinary. This reflects the local government's real commitment to supporting the development of athletic seeds from an early age to the professional level," Amrin said.
Meanwhile, PBTI Competition Committee member, Charles Christofers, revealed that this competition features categories ranging from pre-cadet to senior. Specifically in the senior category, this event also serves as a rigorous selection process to determine athletes qualified to join pelatnas. Fierce competition is expected, especially given the dominant number of contingents from Bandung City across all competition categories.
