Member of Commission XIII of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPR RI), M. Shadiq Pasadigoe, emphasized the importance of placing human rights (HAM) as the main foundation in every business activity in Indonesia. This statement was made during a Hearing with the Indonesia Business and Human Rights Lawyers Working Group (IBHR-LWG) at the Parliamentary Complex, Jakarta, Monday (13/7).
This in-depth discussion highlighted the complexity of the challenges in implementing Business and Human Rights (BHR) principles, ranging from labor dynamics and agrarian conflicts, to environmental impacts and the protection of indigenous peoples' rights. Shadiq stressed that the benchmark for the success of national economic development must not rely solely on the volume of investment flows or corporate profits.
"A sustainable business is one that respects human rights. Companies are obliged to ensure that all their operational activities do not disregard workers' rights, public welfare, and environmental conservation," said the legislator from the NasDem Party Faction.
During the meeting, it was revealed that human rights respect practices in many Indonesian companies currently still tend to be administrative and formalistic. Responding to this, Shadiq stated the need for regulatory strengthening accompanied by more effective and accountable monitoring mechanisms on the ground.
As a concrete step, Shadiq supported the initiative to establish the Parliamentary Caucus for Business and Human Rights. This forum is expected to serve as a catalyst for harmonizing policies across commissions and factions, while ensuring access to fair remedy for those affected by human rights violations within the business corridor.
Commission XIII of the DPR RI is committed to continuing to oversee this policy through its legislative and supervisory functions. Synergy among the government, business actors, academia, and civil society is considered key to building an inclusive and healthy business ecosystem that provides clear legal protection for all elements of the nation.
