The Governor of Southwest Papua, Elisa Kambu, has now officially assumed the mandate as the General Chair of the National Sports Committee of Indonesia (KONI) for Southwest Papua Province for the 2026–2030 term. The inauguration and confirmation ceremony of the new board of administrators was led directly by the General Chair of the Central KONI, Marciano Norman, at the Rylich Panorama Hotel, Sorong City, on Wednesday (29/07/2026).
In his speech, Marciano Norman expressed appreciation and high hopes for the newly formed management. According to him, the presence of the regional head at the helm of KONI is a valuable asset for accelerating the development of sports achievements in the youngest province of Papua.
Furthermore, Marciano suggested that Southwest Papua KONI implement a training strategy focused on leading sports disciplines that have high potential for achievement. He also emphasized the importance of close synergy between KONI, the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimda), and the academic sector such as local universities to create a solid sports ecosystem.
Responding to these directives, Elisa Kambu expressed his commitment to moving quickly to conduct internal consolidation. The initial step to be taken by his management is to formulate a strategic work program to prepare athletes for various major sports agendas at the national level.
