Submarine volcanic activity observed since early May 2026 in the waters north of Papua has become the focus of international scientific attention. Based on imagery data from NASA's Aqua and Terra satellites, this phenomenon demonstrates the birth of a new landmass dramatically captured from space.

Satellite monitoring successfully captured a series of intense geological activity signs, ranging from plumes of hot steam rising high into the atmosphere and drastic sea surface color changes to the formation of volcanic pumice rafts carried by currents around the eruption site.

Experts explain that volcanic material consistently spewed from the depths of the Earth is slowly accumulating on the seafloor. If the accumulation of lava and volcanic ash continues, the deposit is predicted to breach the water surface and form a new island. However, the structural stability of the landmass remains a subject of ongoing debate among researchers.

Looking at historical records, a similar phenomenon gave birth to Surtsey Island in Iceland in 1963, which continues to withstand the pounding waves to this day. However, many other similar volcanic islands have dissolved back into the ocean within a short time due to erosion and structural material instability.
