The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of the Sitaro Islands Regency, North Sulawesi, has issued an official advisory for residents living along river channels originating from the peak of Mount Karangetang. This warning follows an increase in volcanic activity, marked by an eruption on Sunday night.
Sonny Belseran, Head of the Emergency Division at the Sitaro BPBD, emphasized the importance of extra vigilance for residents, particularly during the night. The agency is continuously monitoring the movement of volcanic material that could potentially flow into residential areas through river paths surrounding the active volcano.
According to monitoring data, a small explosive eruption was recorded at 19:14 WITA. The eruption ejected material from the northern crater to a height of 300 to 400 meters, which subsequently triggered lava flows extending 700 to 1,000 meters to the northwest, between the Kali Batu Bulan and Kawahang areas. The projection of hot materials also sparked vegetation fires near the mountain peak.
As of now, Mount Karangetang remains at Alert Level II (Waspada). The public is urged to steer clear of the crater and lava flow paths to avoid potential hazards. Residents are also advised to follow instructions from local authorities and rely solely on official updates released by the BPBD for their safety.
