Volcanic activity at Mount Merapi, located on the border between the Special Region of Yogyakarta and Central Java, has again shown a significant increase. The Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center (BPPTKG) recorded pyroclastic density currents (hot clouds) occurring on Monday (7/6/2026) at exactly 08:28 WIB, with a runout distance reaching 1,700 meters.

The volcanic material flowed toward the southwest, specifically toward the upstream of the Krasak River. This phenomenon was recorded with a maximum amplitude of 32.92 millimeters and a duration of 103.55 seconds. To date, BPPTKG has emphasized that Mount Merapi's status remains at Level III or Alert (Siaga).

In addition to pyroclastic clouds, intensive monitoring from early morning to morning hours also recorded high seismic activity, including 18 rockfall earthquakes and 21 multi-phase earthquakes. Visually, field officers also observed three lava avalanches toward the southwest with a runout distance of up to 1,500 meters.

BPPTKG continues to remind residents around the slopes of Merapi to remain vigilant and stay away from danger areas as well as river channels originating at the volcano's peak. The main potential hazard focus remains on the southern and southwestern sectors, specifically in the areas of the Boyong, Bedog, Krasak, and Bebeng rivers, extending up to a distance of 7 kilometers.

Latest monitoring data indicates that the magma supply process is still ongoing beneath the surface. This condition has the potential to trigger subsequent pyroclastic flows, so the public is urged to always comply with official recommendations and refrain from conducting activities within the designated danger zone.
